BY CYANIDE POISONING RATIONALE: Carbon monoxide and cyanide poisoning frequently occur simultaneously in victims of smoke inhalation. These two agents in combination exhibit synergistic toxicity. HBO2 may have a direct effect in reducing the toxicity of cyanide and augmenting the benefit of antidote treatment. The traditional antidote for cyanide poisoning is the infusion of sodium nitrate, which creates the formation of methemoglobin. This carries the potential to impair the oxygen-carrying capacity of hemoglobin. HBO2 increase in plasma dissolved oxygen content may offer a direct benefit.
