Walk through any wellness expo and you will find hyperbaric chambers sold as a longevity tool — a way to lengthen telomeres, sharpen an aging mind, and slow the cellular clock. Unlike many wellness claims, this one has actual peer-reviewed science attached to it. It also has a regulatory and safety reality that the marketing rarely mentions. Both deserve a clear look.
The science that the marketing points to
The headline studies come from an Israeli research group working with older adults. A 2020 prospective trial in the journal Aging enrolled healthy adults aged 64 and over for 60 daily hyperbaric oxygen sessions and reported telomere length increases of more than 20% across several immune cell types. A related analysis reported reductions in senescent cells — the “aged,” dysfunctional cells that accumulate over time.
A 2021 study from the same group, also in Aging, reported that 60 HBOT sessions improved cognitive performance in older adults with age-related memory decline, with gains that correlated with increased cerebral blood flow.
These are real, published findings, and they are the reason longevity claims about HBOT are not pure invention. But they should be read with their limits in full view: the studies were small — on the order of a few dozen participants — and the telomere work lacked a control group. Biomarker changes in a small, uncontrolled study are a reason to run larger trials, not a demonstration that HBOT extends healthy lifespan.
Where the FDA draws the line
Regulatory status is unambiguous. The FDA’s consumer guidance states that hyperbaric oxygen devices are cleared only for a specific set of medical conditions, and that the agency has not cleared or approved HBOT for uses such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, autism, or Lyme disease. Anti-aging, longevity, and general wellness are not on the cleared list at all.
The cleared indications are medical ones — conditions like air or gas embolism, carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness, gas gangrene, crush injury, diabetic and other non-healing wounds, compromised skin grafts, radiation injury, severe anemia, and thermal burns. “Reverse aging” is not among them, and no amount of biomarker data changes that regulatory fact.
The safety warning the ads leave out
There is also a hard safety dimension. On August 25, 2025, the FDA issued a Letter to Health Care Providers titled “Follow Instructions for Safe Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Devices,” stating it was aware of recent reports of fires involving HBOT devices that resulted in serious injuries and deaths. The agency noted that the root cause was not yet known and emphasized that the high oxygen concentrations inside a chamber increase fire risk.
That warning is the necessary counterweight to the wellness framing. A hyperbaric chamber is an oxygen-rich pressurized environment, and the consequences of mishandling it can be catastrophic — which is why HBOT belongs in accredited facilities operating under manufacturer instructions, not improvised wellness settings.
The honest summary
Could hyperbaric oxygen have anti-aging effects? The early science is intriguing enough to justify serious, larger trials. But intriguing is not proven, the studies to date are small and mostly uncontrolled, the FDA has not cleared HBOT for aging or wellness in any form, and the therapy carries a real, documented fire and pressure risk. Anyone weighing HBOT as a longevity investment should hold all four of those facts at once.
